1785 Payment of Debt to Release Son in Rhode Island
A letter of payment of a bond to one Sirel Dodge for the amount of $40 to get his son - who owed the debt to Mr Dodge - released from jail. The agreement was that Samuel Post Sr (1735-1799) would pay off the debt in 8 months so his son, Samuel Post, Jr (1760-1793) could be released from jail. Samuel Post Sr was a well-known silversmith in Norwich, Rhode Island at the time. The sad part of this story is that his son, Samuel Post Jr, died in 1793, six years before his father died. Samuel Post Jr died of disease after leaving home to start a new life 'out west'.
