1790 Dissenters to the Test Act-A Sermon Preached by Samuel Pearce
The oppressive, unjust, and prophane nature, and tendency of the Corporation and Test Acts is the first part of the title of this pamphlet from 1790. In 1672, the Corporation and Test Acts were passed and this official policy was to exclude Roman Catholics and the more extreme Protestant Nonconformists from holding official positions. All who held office had to take the sacrament of Holy Communion according to Anglican rites. This became untenable and by 1790 - when this sermon was given - the movement to repeal these acts had begun. Both of the acts were repealed in 1828 without a fight.
