This is a very scare 1799 edition of The American Museum: or, Annual Register of Fugitive Pieces, Ancient and Modern. It was printed for Mathew Carey by brothers William and Robert Dickson in Lancaster, PA. Carey's series of American Museum volumes (1787-1792 and 1799) was the first political and literary magazine printed in the United States and was also the first to focus on American topics.

 This amazing and rare volume has a pull out folding table entitled 'A Table Exhibiting a View of the Number of Persons Convicted of All Capital and other Certain Crimes' that covered the years 1779-1792 in Pennsylvania. It also contains William Pinkney's (Maryland) speech on the Condition of the African race before a legislative session in November, 1789, the inauguration speech of John Adams on March 4, 1797 that was followed by the response of the Senate, a 1793 letter from President George Washington, and numerous other articles on current events, politics, and foreign policy. It has a complete index at the end of the book. 

A 1922 bookplate of Henry Franklin Stauffer (noted Lancaster County Bibliophile and letterpress printer) is on front interior cover. It has its original marbled covers and red leather spine.
