1841 'Forms of Disease Peculiar to Women and Children' - Midwifery Book with Picture Plates Intact by Jonathan Phillips.

The entire title of this RARE and wonderful book on midwifery, 'women's diseases, problems during pregnancy, and diseases of the newborn with the name of the doctor who gave this lecture is:

'Lectures on midwifery and the forms of disease peculiar to women and children: delivered to the members of the Botanico-Medical College of Ohio by Alva Curtis' (1797-1881). It was printed by Jonathan Phillips by request of the speaker, Dr Alva Curtis. It is one of the earliest western books on medicine and this is the second edition of the book.

Dr Curtis was president of the Botanico-Medical College of Ohio, where he was professor of the theory and practice of medicine,a  lecturer on anatomy, physiology, botany, and chemistry, and editor of the Botanico-Medical Recorder. This book also includes a materia medica and recipes for several botanical cures including recipes for a Conserve, bitter spices, and cough syrup.

Some of the subjects include 'Midwifery or Obstetrics', 'Recipes' which along with many other recipes that include, 'Botanic Practice', and a chapter titled 'Alarming Symptoms'. This was a book for doctors, midwives, and nurses to use as a daily reference book.

It is extremely rare and even more rare is that all of its plates - even the pull-out plate - are intact and present. There is foxing on some of the pages but that is probably because of the acidic nature of the paper.

Amazing and rare, this book has its original leather cover and spine - it is 8" x 5.25" x 1" in size.
