1867 Washington 2 Cent Revenue Stamp
This is a two cent revenue stamp on an sales receipt from the Chelmsford Foundry Company of North Chelmsford, MA. This is NOT a postage stamp but a revenue stamp that was used as proof of tax paid on various items to help the federal government pay for the Civil War that ended in 1865. This revenue stamp was proof that a tax was paid on the bank check that paid for the items from the Chelmsford Foundry Company. It was 'cancelled', with the date of cancellation added in ink, as proof that the tax was paid. These revenue stamps, in this condition, are rare and very collectible.
