Captain Richard Derby - Two 18th Century 'Chits' or Payment Receipts

$59.95Price

One of these chits or receipts is a transaction between Captain Richard Derby (1721-1783) and a Mr Bethel where it looks like Captain Derby may have been paying a tavern bill for Mr Bethel to a Mary Guess. Richard Derby was a sea captain and merchant who was the patriarch of the Derby shipping firm in Salem Massachusetts. He defied the efforts of Colonel Alexander Leslie to confiscate American cannon during the incident at Salem's North Bridge ("Leslie's Retreat") on February 26, 1775 and hsi son, Captain John Derby is considered one of the most obscure patriots of the Revolution. A short synopsis of his work during the Revolution can be seen here: https://www.nps.gov/sama/learn/historyculture/upload/Vol2No1ManTwiceForgotten.pdf

The second receipt is between a Robert Bardwell and a Murray Bennet from Hatfield, MA. Robert Bardwell was a descendant of the first Robert Bardwell who arrived in America in 1670. He fought for his new country in King Phillip's War and because of his courageous activity in this war, his descendants were granted large tracts of land at Bardwell Ferry on the Connecticut River.
